Teaching Aids
Several of Kevin Major's books are used as novel studies, or to supplement the social studies curriculum. This section brings together suggestions for general activities, as well as listing resource material that could be used in conjunction with the historical novels.
At present this sections covers four books:
Hold Fast ...
Far From Shore ...
Blood Red Ochre ...
No Man's Land
Most of the suggestions for the first two books are from a teacher's guide to these novels developed by Fay Blostein of UofT several years ago. The author would be very pleased to hear from teachers willing to share activities that have proven successful in their work with any of the books, with a view to posting them on this site (with due credit, of course).
Asked how he would like to see his books used in schools, Major said, "I hate to think that studying the novels would deaden the enthusiasm students may first bring to them. Rather, I hope it could serve to enliven their interest in reading and act as a springboard to discussions about their own lives and the lives of those around them."
